The Rooster & The Jewel
Translation by George Fyler Townsend via Project Gutenberg
A Rooster, scratching for food for himself and his hens, found a precious stone and exclaimed: “If your owner had found thee, and not I, he would have taken thee up, and have set thee in thy first estate; but I have found thee for no purpose. I would rather have one barleycorn than all the jewels in the world.”
Mr. Townsend does not list a moral with this translation, so here’s mine:
Luxuries are meaningless until our collective, core needs are met.
…More on that in a moment!
Work Stuff
This week I actually have some pretty exciting projects to share. In June, Raising Cane’s opened up their flagship restaurant in Times Square and I had the honor of designing a NYC-themed coloring book for their onsite retail. If you find yourself thereabouts soon, be sure to check out the restaurant and pick up a copy! I can’t wait to get my hands on one.
Second, I’ve finally ordered some new items for my shop, including greeting cards, illustrative prints, and enamel pins (eek!). I’m aiming to have everything updated by next month, look out for an exclusive Art & Fable subscriber discount soon!
Freebie Zone
If you haven’t already, take a moment to download this bookmark pdf. I’ll be replacing it with a new freebie for next time—stay tuned!
Epilogue
So, how’d you like that fable? It struck me that this one features a character looking not just to feed himself, but also his hens—or others in the community, as I prefer to think of it. It’s a refreshing notion for those of us who come from a hyper-individualist place like the US. Even though the story primarily emphasizes a needs hierarchy, it also reminds us to hold our communities close—and to act on that closeness. Being generous with the fruits of our successes can ensure the longevity of our communities. Plus, it tastes so sweet when we invite others to share with us.
Anyway, remember your needs hierarchy (i.e. take care of yourself first before you extend too much for others) but also, I hope you have many successes to share this week!! As always, reply to this email if you want to say hello. Otherwise, see you next time!
Tot ziens,
